What will be the impact of the Supreme Court's decision on Trump's tax returns?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
In a decision Tuesday, the Supreme Court allowed the House Ways and Means Committee to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns, the latest in a winding legal fight dating back to 2019. No dissents were recorded in the decision, nor was any explanation of the decision publicly released (which is common for cases on the emergency docket).

The Treasury Department had resisted calls to provide Trump's taxes during his presidency, but the Biden administration later argued that Congress has the power to examine any taxpayer's return. Trump's lawyers have argued that Congress' actions are unprecedented, saying "No Congress has ever wielded its legislative powers to demand a president’s tax returns." Lower courts have sided with the committee.

The committee requested the tax returns as part of its investigation into the former president's compliance with IRS auditing. As Republicans are slated to take control of the House in January, it remains unclear what the committee will accomplish with its remaining time.

Should the government provide grants to keep struggling nuclear plants running?

359 votes, 48 comments

Context: Biden administration grants $1.1 billion to keep California's last nuclear power plant operating.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - But it does depend on *why* they're struggling. Are they not producing power? Probably a good reason to not bail them out. Are they too old and have clear structural issues or dangers? Maybe put the money into building a newer, safer, more cost-effective plant instead. Are they costing more than other types of power because those types are also being subsidized? Then yes, subsidizing nuclear power also makes sense. Nuclear plants are an important piece of the puzzle which can provide on-demand power in times when solar/wind are struggling. The newer designs are more cost-effective and safe, and deserve to be explored and built.

No - This is frustrating. I believe nuclear power is the future, and I do want the government to be more pro-n...
