Why did a woman request a federal court let her witness her father's execution?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
Missouri is scheduled to execute Kevin Johnson on Nov. 29 for the 2005 murder of a police sergeant. His 19-year-old daughter, Corionsa Ramey, requested that she be able to view the execution, arguing that a Missouri law preventing those under the age of 21 from witnessing executions violated her constitutional rights. The court denied Ramey's request.

On the same day that the 19-year-old Johnson killed a police officer, his younger brother died from a seizure. Johnson accused the officer of impeding aid to his brother, and upon encountering the officer later, shot and killed him. Johnson's attorneys are separately seeking a stay of his execution, arguing that racism played a role in his sentencing.

Johnson has been a close confidant of Ramey despite having been incarcerated when she was two years old. A lawyer from the American Civil Liberties Union who is representing Ramey previously described the Missouri law as "illogical," saying that the state believes 19-year-olds are mature enough to execute but not enough to witness executions.

Should police be allowed to use deadly force via remote-controlled robots?

387 votes, 42 comments

Context: Draft San Francisco police policy would allow lethal force via armed, remote-controlled robots.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Giving them military grade equipment is already an issue, and supplying them with robots to do the dirty work is an extremely dangerous path to go down. Police are already becoming out of touch with their communities, and this not only pushes them that much farther out, but sends a terrible message to those their sworn to protect. This is psychological warfare and has no place on American soil being used against American people

Yes - A robot is a tool, a gun is a tool, either way there is a person in control. That doesn't mean that this method should supersede non-lethal methods of de-escalating a situation. This sho...
