Creativity is the driving force of innovation. It’s what leads you to an idea that people have never seen, heard, or read. To maximize your creativity, invite muses into your mind.

There are two types of muses. There are muses of the external world, like a sunset, a mountain landscape, or a beautiful person (think Jack drawing Rose like one of his French girls). But you don’t have to wait to find your muse in the world. There are also muses of the mind. They are all your weird, wild, and crazy thoughts — the ones you’d never dare share with your mother. 

If you look at history, some of the greatest creative minds were people who embraced their strange idiosyncrasies. 

History’s muses of the mind:

• David Bowie believed he was an alien.
• Nikola Tesla claimed he had conversations with radios.
• John Rockefeller believed he was doing God’s work by making oil.
• Erwin Schrödinger plugged his ears with pearls while on a camping trip and discovered the equation that forever changed quantum mechanics.
• Paul Dirac said his eponymous equation came to him out of a fire.

Don’t dodge or justify your intuitions. Embrace them and see where they lead you.

Those muses of the mind, those thoughts that no one has ever thought, are what will lead to innovation. Let your creativity flourish by being open to the unusual and unique. You don’t have to scour the world in search of creative inspiration. There are muses within you.
