Dear writers,

Imagine receiving a present with the most beautiful wrapping — from the intricate knot of the bow to the shiny and sturdy paper. It looks absolutely exquisite — simply perfect. 

And inside is a pair of socks. 

The prettiness of your prose means nothing if its contents aren’t worth unwrapping.

Make your writing more than pretty paper and a bow. Communicate valuable ideas. Teach something to your reader, or have them question what they know.

Next time you revise your writing, look past the surface. Examine your ideas, and make sure you’re not wrapping a pair of socks.
