What was discussed at the confirmation hearing for President Biden's IRS appointee?

  1. Summary
In his Wednesday Senate confirmation hearing, President Biden's pick to lead the IRS, Daniel Werfel, fielded questions on how the agency would handle an influx in funding. GOP lawmakers have been highly critical of a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed last August, that will increase funding for the IRS by $80 billion over 10 years.

Republicans argue that the funding will allow the IRS to effectively double its workforce and that the influx of funds will result in more audits for the middle class. President Biden and Treasury Secretary Yellen have pledged that the IRS will not increase audit rates for households earning less than $400,000 per year, which Werfel reiterated on Wednesday.

The Biden administration says that the funding will be used to target high-income taxpayers and modernize the agency. The lion's share of the Inflation Reduction Act's funding boost will go towards enforcement. At the hearing, Werfel committed to releasing a plan for spending the new funds. The Senate is expected to approve his appointment.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The color of your skin, who you have sex with, and your religion or lack thereof have nothing to do with your ability to perform as a judge. These things should not be part of considering one's merit for becoming a federal judge. Some may argue, well if all other things are equal why shouldn't it be taken into consideration? First, all other things are never equal. No two people have the exact same experience, education, references, etc.

Yes - Obviously, it is important to have qualified individuals for these appointments. However, as our country is composed of a diverse population with v...
