What did President Biden say in his State of the Union address?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
In his State of the Union address, President Biden claimed legislative victories from his first two years in office -- particularly the health and climate package, the infrastructure bill, and investments in the semiconductor industry. “Jobs are coming back," he said of his economic agenda. Biden said Congressional Republicans want to cut Medicare and Social Security to reduce the deficit, a statement some Republicans booed.

Biden opened his address by congratulating GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy's election to speaker of the House of Representatives. Speaker McCarthy, for his part, signaled that he would not repeat the "theatrics” of his precedessor Rep. Nancy Pelosi, referring to when she ripped up a transcript of former President Trump's SOTU address in 2020.

Biden urged Congress to pass his proposal for a billionaire tax and to quadruple the tax on corporate stock buybacks. He also noted the recently-passed $35 cap on insulin for Medicare recipients, and called on Congress to extend the cap to all Americans.

Yes - We need to help foster jobs but also need to help train and possibly help police countries to eliminate the gangs and criminal enterprises. Many people are looking for safety rather than economic opportunity. They don’t want to be afraid to leave their homes for fear of attacks. We need a multi-pronged approach to best serve the needs of the people and get government working for the people.

No - First, and this cannot be overstated, the economic conditions in other countries are not the responsibility of the US. [...] Second, "free money" will not change nor will it encourage change in the economic policies of these places, change ...

Unsure - In theory. But if 'investments' means that ...
