  1. Summary
A shooting at Michigan State University late Monday night left three students dead and five wounded. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an extensive manhunt. Two MSU students are survivors of previous school shootings: the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School and the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

Police do not yet know a motive. The gunman was unaffiliated with the school and had a history of mental health issues. The suspect was charged with a felony in 2019 for carrying a concealed pistol without a permit, but the charge was dropped and he plead guilty to a misdemeanor. Defense lawyer Wade Fink told Detroit News that this is not unusual for people without criminal histories.

Legal experts interviewed by Detroit News had mixed opinions as to whether the gunman would have been able to legally acquire guns after the probation for his misdemeanor ended. The suspect's father said he believes his son acquired the gun used in the shooting at a pawn shop.

Should Ford's battery plant be disqualified from federal subsidies for its China ties?

353 votes, 38 comments

Context: Ford announces new EV battery plant in Michigan, which will license tech from a Chinese firm.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Two reasons. 1.) The government should not be using tax dollars to pick winners and losers. Ford’s competitors are being forced through taxation to subsidize Ford. 2.) China is a totalitarian dictatorship which persecutes portions of its population and also uses forced taxation to pick winners and losers.

No - I do agree that we're too dependent on China, but just as how we can't switch to renewables overnight, we can't reverse decades ...

Unsure - As long as none of the subsidies and grants...
