The GIST - Get’cha head in the game
From The Gist Team

Quote of the Day |
It was laddy, blokey behavior, passing him the tampon, effectively saying, ‘I’ve outdriven you. You’re driving the ball like a woman’…Women should not be portrayed as being inferior to men in any walk of life, and certainly not on a sporting landscape.
— Golf commentator Sarah Stirk, criticizing Tiger Woods after he passed his competitor, Justin Thomas, a tampon as a “joke” during the Genesis Invitational over the weekend. It’s a no from us…period. |

⚽ SheBelieves Cup: It all comes down to this
The GIST: With the global fight for equal pay marching on in the backdrop (and on their wrists), the USWNT kicks off their final game of the SheBelieves Cup tonight, and the trophy hangs in the balance.
Weekend recap: The world No. 1 red, white and blue lead the SheBelieves standings after taking down No. 11 Japan 1–0 on Sunday. Stop us if you heard this one before, but forward Mallory Swanson was the difference-maker, scoring her sixth goal in four games. That’ll do.
Tonight’s game: It all comes down to tonight’s 7 p.m. ET match vs. No. 9 Brazil, arguably the USWNT’s toughest opponent of the tournament. The Canarinha are sitting in third, but could steal the trophy from the three-time defending champs with a win and multiple goals.
- But it’ll be a tough task, especially if the Americans see the return of midfielder Rose Lavelle, who’ll be a game-time decision after sitting out the first two matches with an injury.
- Can the USWNT make it four straight SheBelieves? Or will Brazil’s creative midfielders craft up a masterpiece? Our eyes will be glued to HBO Max to find out.
🏀 Athletes Unlimited: Get’cha head in the game
The GIST: Hoops fans, rejoice, because Athletes Unlimited’s (AU) second season tips off tomorrow from Dallas, TX. Amid lingering uncertainty about WNBA players playing overseas in the offseason, AU’s (literally) changing the game.
The setup: Basketball was AU’s fourth sport, following successful softball, volleyball and lacrosse seasons. Instead of a traditional franchise vs. franchise format, AU uses a fantasy-inspired system, with four captains selecting new squads each week over the course of a five-week season.
- Scoring is based on both individual and team performance. Athletes at the top of the weekly leaderboard become one of the four captains and are tasked with drafting their team for the following week. It’s giving middle school kickball, in the best way.
Players to watch: The 44-player roster features 18 athletes with significant WNBA experience, headlined by Washington Mystics standout Natasha Cloud, Olympic 3x3 gold medalist Allisha Gray, 2021 W All-Star Courtney Williams and WNBA trailblazer Layshia Clarendon. Talk about starpower.
Zooming out: WNBA players have traditionally cashed in by playing overseas in the offseason, but in the wake of (newly re-signed) Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner’s wrongful detainment in Russia and with the league cracking down on new prioritization rules, that trend could be on the decline.
- AU offers W talent a chance to tune up before the season tips off in May, provides bubble players a platform to showcase their skills and, most importantly, affords them the opportunity to do it domestically. There’s no place like home, afterall.
