Hurry Slowly - Deprogramming from grind culture

Hi Friends-

I’ve been on the cusp of birthing a new web incarnation for many months now, and the stars have finally aligned. (No surprise as some hugely transformative astrological shifts just kicked off on Tuesday.)

At long last, I’ve released my “productivity persona” and stepped into a new narrative that encompasses the fullness of the work I’ve been exploring for many years now — working with words and the voice, creating emergent courses, and doing energy work. You can check out my new vision for my work at jkg.co.

Because of this shift, this newsletter will soon be coming from a new domain. I am retiring jkglei.com, and future newsletters will be coming to you from ideas@jkg.co. Lest my future messages go to spam, please do whitelist the new email address, ideas@jkg.co. Here’s how you can do that.

In other news, I’m thrilled to share that I will be co-teaching a new workshop with my dear friend Sebene Selassie next month.

FINDING YOUR VOICE: Nurturing Your Sacred Expression in the World

Our world is hurting, and we each hold a piece of the cure — a sacred truth that wants to be expressed. Yet we keep quiet, we hold back, we look for permission.

How do you discover the truth that is yours to speak? Lean into the flow of self-expression? Protect and care for your voice in this noisy world?

We will explore these questions and more in this two-part, experiential workshop, hosted on Zoom.

Dates: Two Sundays, April 9 & April 16 @ 1-5pm EST

Booking: Registration opens March 21, 2023

Pricing: $198 full tuition / $118 scholarship*

* A scholarship rate is available for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, differently abled folx, and/or those experiencing serious financial hardship.

I'll share a link to booking details in this newsletter after registration opens, but go ahead and mark your calendar! : )

Self-expression, and freeing the voice, is a topic I am incredibly passionate about, and this is going to be a really special gathering!

Much love,
Jocelyn

LINK ABOUT IT

Deprogramming from grind culture. I keep seeing Tricia Hersey's new book Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto popping up in new places — and thank goodness because our culture needs her message so very much right now. I loved listening to Hersey preach on deprogramming during this interview on the always-thoughtful For the Wild podcast.

On abandoning your masterpiece (in a good way). I speak often with a friend of mine about the paralysis of thinking about making "masterpieces," so I appreciated this excerpt from the Leonard Cohen biopic about how abandoning the masterpiece is what allows you to sink into the real masterpiece.

Famous photographers' portraits of their partners. This Twitter thread is a gorgeous collection of photos of the partners of famous photographers. And quite a few of the partners are themselves well-known artists. I'm particularly enjoying the images of Julia Child, Susan Sontag, and David Wojnarowicz.

Fight the Power: How hip hop changed the world. This fantastic 4-part PBS series, executive produced and hosted by Public Enemy's Chuck D, is music education and a history lesson rolled into one. Featuring interviews with Ice-T, LL Cool J, Will.i.am, Roxanne Shanté, Monie Love, Eminem, Killer Mike, and Warren G to name just a few. Don't miss it.

The end of the golden age of tech accountability. This piece makes the counterintuitive (and rather disturbing) argument that the last five years may have been a "golden age" for trust and safety online. Essentially, it makes the point that allowing the ethics of our online spaces to be dictated by the private sector — rather than our democracy — is highly problematic.

Power and Weirdness: How to use Bing AI. Like it or not, we are on the cusp of AI changing everything about how we live and work. This little cheat sheet for using the new version of Bing gives some insight into the power of what these new large language models can do. I find it both disturbing and breath-taking. (If you've been living under a rock — which I totally support btw — here's an explainer on ChatGPT, which the new Bing is based on.)

Heaven and Earth is a dragon's dream. For those of you open to the more "out-there" ideas, my mind was blown by this ancient explanation of dragons as the principle kinetic energy of the cosmos, as exhibited by how our planets move through the solar system, the double helix structure of DNA, and much more. Another example of our ancestors already understanding everything modern science is discovering.

Attuning to my vibes only. My friend Sebene, mentioned above, wrote a wonderful, short-and-sweet essay about taking a break from social media to attune to her own vibrations. I've been reflecting myself on the need to tune into our own internal, idiosyncratic guidance right now so it really resonated.
