Why were dozens of activists arrested in the Atlanta area?

Source: Reuters

  1. Summary
On Monday about 100 black-clad protestors stormed a proposed Atlanta-area police training center. Some set fire to construction vehicles, launched fireworks at officers, and threw Molotov cocktails. 35 were detained and 23 were charged with domestic terrorism. All but two arrestees are from out-of-state. No officers were injured.

Investigators describe the attack as coordinated. They believe participants attended a nearby music festival before moving towards the training center. Activists have protested the $90 million center that they call "Cop City" for months, saying it will militarize the police and harm the environment.

Tensions between police and activists have run high for weeks. On Jan. 18, when authorities cleared out a protest encampment, one protestor was killed by police after he shot a state trooper. Some have argued that authorities deployed rarely-used terrorism charges excessively: of 20 protestors charged with terrorism from December to January, none were accused of injuring anyone, and nine only trespassed.

Should standardized tests like the SAT be optional in college admissions?

385 votes, 60 comments

Context: Columbia University extends its policy of having the SAT be optional, not required, for applicants.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Standardized tests show only a moment in time for a student. Not only that, but they many times only show how good a student is at taking a test, not what a student actually knows. There are so many services out there now that teach students how to take these specific tests and how to score high on them; students can take the tests repeatedly and choose which scores to submit, etc. It becomes really unfair for a student who may be unable to afford to take the test at all if it’s not offered for free by the school district (looking at you SAT) or for a student who can’t afford a second, third, fourth shot if they don’t do well, or to take a test prep course.

No - Standardized tests should be tweaked so that they are racially neutral but not gotten rid of or made ...

Unsure - If it's just optional and not being completely dropped, it doesn't seem so bad to me -- it lets applicants show their respective strengths. But ...
