What did a Fox News host's release of new Jan. 6 footage include?

  1. Summary
On Monday Fox News host Tucker Carlson released never-before-seen footage of the Jan. 6 riot, which had been given to him by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Carlson used the footage to argue that the capitol riot's severity was exaggerated: “‘Deadly insurrection.’ Everything about that phrase is a lie. [...] Very little about Jan. 6 was organized or violent. Surveillance video from inside the Capitol shows mostly peaceful chaos."

Most of the footage shown consisted of rioters wandering around without attacking people or objects. One clip showed “QAnon Shaman” Jacob Chansley being followed calmly by multiple officers, one of whom held a door open for Chansley. Capitol Police responded that it was de-escalation tactic made because of the threat of hundreds of nearby rioters. Some wondered if the footage could impact Chansley's prison sentence.

Many argued Carlson's footage lacked context or was selectively edited. Carlson said most of the 40,000 hours of footage he received was of empty rooms, and said minor changes were made at the request of Capitol Police.
