Why did the Federal Reserve increase interest rates despite banking problems?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics

  1. Summary
The Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced its ninth consecutive interest rate hike. The 25 basis-point increase puts the overall federal funds rate at a range of 4.75% to 5%, its highest since 2007. It comes after higher costs of borrowing contributed to Silicon Valley Bank's collapse.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that despite recent bank collapses, the banking system is "resilient" and inflation remains the Fed's main focus. Year-over-year inflation has slowed to 6% but remains far above the Fed's target of 2%. Earlier this month, Powell told Congress that "the historical record cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy."

This time the Fed dropped phrasing that accompanied the last eight rate hikes, that it expects "ongoing increases" to the federal funds rate, and hinted it would wait and see before raising rates further. It is a shift from two weeks ago, when Powell suggested the central bank would hike rates at a faster rate. A recession sparked by a financial crisis could be more severe than the mild recession some expected Fed policy alone to cause.

Do you generally support public school worker unions?

457 votes, 57 comments

Context: Los Angeles' non-teaching school workers go on strike, teachers support them.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The degree to which the strike inconveniences the public reflects the immediate value of the workers, just as with every union. Teachers are trained in sophisticated methods, face daily pressures brought often on by the cynicism of politicians and misled values of parents, and work hours far beyond their contracts. It's weird that opponents to the demands of unions of teachers, railroad workers, air traffic controllers, and other essential jobs object to their strikes precisely because their work is so essential.

No - (One of the most pro-union/liberal American presidents ever) President Franklin D. Roosevelt also rejected government unionism. He told the head of th...
