  1. Summary
The Securities and Exchange Commission recently announced charges against eight celebrities, including actress Lindsay Lohan, rapper Soulja Boy, and internet influencer Jake Paul, for promoting cryptocurrency assets without disclosing that they had been compensated for the promotions.

Many of the celebrities promoted crypto products created by entrepreneur Justin Sun, who was also charged by the SEC for recruiting celebrity endorsers. Six of the eight stars agreed to settle with the agency for a total of $400,000. Last year Kim Kardashian paid $1.26 million in a similar SEC settlement.

Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., said that the SEC may sue the company for allegedly violating securities law. Coinbase's chief legal officer says nothing on the exchange should qualify as a security. He said federal agencies do not agree on how to classify cryptocurrencies for regulation, with one agency calling Ethereum a commodity (outside of the SEC's purview) in contrast to the SEC's position.

Should inflation be a higher priority for the Federal Reserve than banking stability?

306 votes, 31 comments

Context: Fed issues small rate hike amid concerns it could further destabilize financial sector.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - As long as the pain of instability is inflicted on the shareholders and bondholders of the banks, then inflation is more important. People who buy stocks understand they can be wiped out if the company, like SVB, is so badly managed that it fails. Meanwhile, inflation is very hard on people whose only fault is trusting in a currency. And most people don’t have a lot of choices in that regard.

No - Our system can function on higher than average inflation. It cannot function ...
