A weekly dose of comfort for your inbox with musings on and recommendations for downtime.

Happy Friday,

You don’t have to sleep on a bed shaped like a piece of toast to bring some joy and whimsy into your day—although if anyone knows where I can find one, please hit me up. This week is all about getting playful, from pink cake and can’t-put-down reads to using exuberant makeup to spark joy.

How have you incorporated playfulness into your routines? Send us your ideas! We’d love to share them in an upcoming newsletter.

This Week's Picks

Curated this week by Aliza

When the cake craving hits: It’s not my birthday, but that won’t stop me from making this cheery, fluffy, extremely pink Mexican sheet cake from Esteban Castillo.

I can’t stop reading: Y/N, Esther Yi’s smart novel about a staunchly anti-stan culture Korean-American woman whose unexpected obsession with a K-pop idol sends her to Seoul on a journey of darkly hilarious self-destruction.

For the soul: Expand your horizons with the latest episode of Generational Anxiety, where jazz musicians like Grammy winner esperanza spalding discuss music’s regenerative power. Stream for free on ALL ARTS.  *Sponsor

*Adds to podcast queue*: A funny and fascinating episode on the origin of those Bioré nose pore strips. (Remember Anne Hathaway wearing one in The Princess Diaries?)

Make the most of that bouquet: Buying cut flowers is my favorite springtime treat, but I always feel a little sad composting the blooms after a few days, which is why I was excited to stumble upon two smart tricks: A low-waste bouquet project to turn dead daffodils into pretty garlands, and two techniques for perking up tulips.

Not even water: It’s Ramadan, and I loved reading this helpful (and aesthetically gorgeous) guide to the holiday aimed at helping non-Muslims understand and support those who are observing.

The coziest tea trick: Use an orange half as a tea strainer to infuse your favorite tea with sunny citrus flavor.

Morning listening: I start every day with The Breakfast Show, a good-vibes-guaranteed radio show on the free streaming platform NTS. Bonus: No ads, just sunshiney tunes.

Celebrating child-free: Women Without Kids is a new, fiercely feminist book exploring the unsung sisterhood of women living without children today. Download a discussion guide and enter to win a “Sisterhood of the Selfish C*nts” tote if you buy your copy before April 13th.  *Sponsor

Just trust me: The most wholesome site on the internet is De Visdeurbel, or The Fish Doorbell. Volunteers watch a livestream and press a virtual doorbell to open a canal in the Netherlands for fish to safely migrate. (You can read more about it in English here.) I helped a fish to freedom yesterday and it truly felt like an accomplishment.

Low-waste gardening: I’ve been collecting my empty tofu containers to reuse as little potting containers for my first-ever garden since I saw this helpful DIY video. (P.S. Did you see last week’s issue on plants and gardening?)

For the knitters and crocheters: A genius video that proves yarn and pool time can mix—at least if you’re careful.

Mi-Anne Chan Wears Makeup to Boost Serotonin, Not Look Perfect 💄

I can’t help but smile when I see a selfie from Mi-Anne Chan in my Instagram feed. The beauty writer and founder of the newsletter mixed feelings is a master of sparking joy with her makeup. Think: green shimmery cat eyes, dots inspired by butterfly wings, and other unfussy looks that simply seem fun. Her take on beauty is meant to delight, not necessarily look flawless or “snatched,” so I’m thrilled to share her tips on doing makeup for its serotonin-boosting impact alone.—Aliza

I spent four years as a beauty editor at an online women’s mag, so I won’t go on about how a “layer of red lipstick can boost confidence!” At the end of the day, it’s just makeup, which is great. It can be the perfect proverbial “treat”—a pop of glitter applied to the eyes, just to feel something.

Makeup trends have shapeshifted so many times in the past year alone. (Soft girl, under-eye makeup, “invisible” eyeliner, to name a few…) For some it’s overwhelming, but for me, it’s exhilarating. I see the trend cycle as an opportunity to be whoever I want to be on any given day, and not a guilt-trip into buying another eyeliner.

Dipping your toes into the world of cosmetic experimentation? These products help me get playful with my makeup:

For eyes: User-friendly formulas like About Face’s Fluid Eye Paints come in a range of saturated colors and can be used as shadows or liners. For a one-and-done palette, I can’t recommend the Claropsyche Sketch Paint palette enough. It’s a water-activated set of adaptable face paints that I love to use on the eyes with a thin, flexible liner brush from more intricate, editorial-inspired looks. And for a smokey eye with just as much serotonin-boosting impact but less color, I love a blendable black eye pencil like the one from Neen.

For cheeks and lips: You can’t go wrong with Nudestix or Axiology’s 100% compostable cream blushes. For lips, I recommend Tower28’s hydrating Lip Jellies which come in a variety of fun hues and finishes.

“Don’t forget that many public libraries offer seeds and bulbs in their Seed Libraries for free! Basically you check out packs of seeds and, if you want, you can save some of the seeds when you harvest the plant and return them to the library. My local library system in Salt Lake City has seed libraries at each location and hosts Seed Swaps for the community!"—Madeleine P., sharing a helpful tip in response to last week's issue on gardening. Another great reason to love libraries; thanks for sharing!
