Why are GOP lawmakers trying to expel three Democrats from Tennessee's legislature?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
This week Tennessee's House of Representatives voted to expel three House Democrats for "disorderly behavior." The issue arises from an incident last week, in which protestors swarmed Tennessee's legislature to demand gun control. The three House Democrats approached the podium without being authorized, a breach of chamber rules, and used a bullhorn to lead protestors in the galleries in several chants.

The House speaker, a Republican, said the incident was "at least equivalent, maybe worse" to the Jan. 6 capitol riot. He later clarified that he referred only to the Democrats, who he accused of inciting an insurrection, and not the protestors. The March 30 protests were peaceful and demonstrators entered the buildings lawfully. No injuries or arrests were reported.

The GOP-controlled Senate will likely finalize the expulsion on Thursday. The state House last expelled a lawmaker in 2016 for sexual misconduct, and before that in 1980 for soliciting a bribe. One of the three facing removal says her peers have exhibited worse behavior without punishment.

Yes - The fact that this is obviously a political move does not mean that Trump should not face charges for his shady business dealings. [...] Yes, there is indeed something comical about an AG who goes so light on violent crime all of a sudden throwing the book at a man over a bribe to a porn star, but I guess what I am saying is that this break from precedent of allowing politicians to get away with stuff is one that should be embraced and applied universally.

No - In my opinion, I don't believe it will result in a conviction. It will be hard to find a jury that will not be influenced by political affiliation over presentation. I believe Trum...
