What would be the impact of the Iraq War authorization's repeal?

  1. Summary
The Senate on Wednesday voted 66-30 to repeal two authorizations for use of military force (AUMFs) in Iraq from 1991 and 2002. AUMFs are not a formal declaration of war, which Congress last issued in World War II. It remains unclear if the Senate's repeal will also pass the House.

The resolution's sponsors say Iraq is different now, and that AUMFs cede too much of Congress' power to the president. "Leaving outdated authorizations on the books can lead to abuse," said Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va. Former President Trump invoked the 2002 AUMF to justify the drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani in 2020. On Tuesday Sen. Mitch McConnell said the AUMFs are needed to counter Iran's influence.

An AUMF from 2001, intended to target al-Qaida in Afghanistan, remains in place and is unlikely to be repealed soon. That AUMF holds broader language and has been used to justify dozens of operations in at least 19 countries. About 2,500 American troops remain in Iraq in support roles under the 2001 AUMF. A repeal of the 2002 AUMF would not remove them.

Should companies have to tell regulators about how they price gas at the pump?

380 votes, 47 comments

Context: CA bill will require refineries to disclose how they price gas, and potentially levy fines for excessive profits.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Gas is a necessary resource, not a luxury. People of all socioeconomic statuses use it to go to work, travel, pick up their kids, etc. Profiting off of a necessity like gasoline isn't good but it's not the worst thing in the world either. However, when profits become so outrageous that people can't afford to drive, there needs to be accountability. This isn't something "less avocado toast" can fix.

No - Every additional regulation increases overhead costs for these companies which they then pass through to consumers. There is plenty of competition in the retail...
