What is known about the indictment of former President Trump?

Source: Daily Beast via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
Multiple news outlets reported on Thursday that a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict former President Donald Trump, making it the first time that a former president has been criminally charged. The charges relate to alleged 2016 hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The details of Trump's likely surrender remain unclear.

The indictment remains sealed, meaning little is known about the charges or their merits. Three anonymous sources involved in the case told the Daily Beast this week that the indictment DA Alvin Bragg has sought is too weak for a standalone criminal case. Bragg's predecessor had considered pursuing a similar case several times, but decided against it.

Payments to Daniels were made via Trump's then-attorney Michael Cohen, who plead guilty to federal charges in 2018. Unlike Cohen, Trump is facing charges under New York state law, which some say is a worse fit for a criminal case. A former Manhattan prosecutor told NPR that felony charges could be justified if the action was taken to conceal another crime.

Are you less likely to buy from a company that you think has poor labor practices in the US?

Context: Senate committee holds hearing on Starbucks' alleged anti-union activity.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - For that matter, I am less likely to buy from or invest in a company that I believe has poor labor, environmental and ethical practices anywhere. However, SBUX is the near antithesis of a company with poor labor practices. Management in general and Schultz in particular are champions of their employees' well-being and models for responsible capitalism - ensuring front line employees earn a living wage and have real benefits, including tuition assistance designed to allow them to continue to improve their position - and should be emulated by other companies.

No - These days if you don't buy from a company with poor labor practices, you won't be buying much. I t...
