What is next in the legal battle over abortion-inducing drugs?

Source: Kaiser Family Foundation

  1. Summary
On Friday two district judges made opposing rulings on the abortion drug mifepristone. In Texas, Trump-appointee Matthew J. Kacsmaryk agreed with conservative groups challenging the FDA's 23-year-old approval of the drug as safe and effective. Meanwhile in Washington, Obama-appointee Thomas Rice directed the federal government to not block access to mifepristone in 17 states where Democrats sued to keep it available.

Experts told Vox that Kacsmaryk's ruling cited scientific inaccuracies, and said it was alarming that a judge could overturn a health agency's findings. Kacsmaryk stayed his ruling for a week to give the government time to file a challenge. Kacsmaryk noted that some nonprofits are undermining states with restrictions on abortion pills.

The FDA cannot fully comply with both rulings at once. Most legal observers expect the issue to be brought before the Supreme Court. The Health and Human Services secretary did not rule out having the FDA ignore Kacsmaryk's ruling, which Republican lawmakers criticized.

Do you support Idaho's "abortion trafficking" law?

Context: Idaho bans helping a minor get an abortion without parental consent, even if the procedure was done in another state.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - It is my opinion that abortion should not be used as a method of birth control. But a woman does have the right to such a procedure. It is wrong for a state to prosecute someone for exercising their rights in another state. It violates her right to free travel.

Yes - Abortions are major medical procedures. If a well-meaning adult in the child's life takes them for an abortion without knowing the child's medical hi...

Unsure - I think under certain circumstances it should be criminal to circumvent parental consent, and others not so much. Reading the text of Idaho house bill no. 242...
