Why was a teenager shot in Kansas City, Missouri?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Andrew D. Lester, an 85-year-old white man in Kansas City, Missouri, has been charged with armed assault for shooting Ralph Yarl, a black teenager. Yarl, 16, was sent to pick up his younger brothers at 115th Terrace, but mistakenly arrived at 115th Street. Yarl's family attorneys say he rang the doorbell, and Lester shot him in the head and arm. The incident occurred last Thursday. Yarl was discharged from the hospital on Sunday.

Yarl's family says he ran to three different houses nearby for help until eventually a neighbor helped him, after making him lie on the ground with his hands up. The neighbor, who spoke to CNN anonymously, said she was concerned for Yarl but cautious because it was unclear who fired the shots.

Lester was held for 24 hours and released pending further investigation, as required by Missouri law. A warrant was later issued for his arrest. The police chief said current information "does not say that that is racially motivated," but that the investigation is ongoing. Mayor Quinton Lucas said the case may involve a "Stand Your Ground" law defense.

Should Congress create a code of ethics for the Supreme Court?

486 votes, 62 comments

Context: Scrutiny of Justice Clarence Thomas' unreported gifts draws proposals for SCOTUS code of ethics.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I fail to see how it would destroy the Supreme Court if the justices that are appointed to the Supreme Court had to follow the same rules that all the other appointed federal judges on the lower courts have to follow? Are they above the law? Are they high priests? I don’t believe so. Granted, I also believe all members of Congress should have to follow the rules that apply to every federal employee so I am probably just going down a rabbit hole of madness here.

No - Congress has lifelong representatives entering their position with little or no wealth, and leaving as rich millionaires. Congress won't enact term limits on itself, despite this being very popular. So how do we entrust Congress, which is...

Unsure - I believe that the Supreme Court s...
