The year may be young-ish, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some meaningful trends to be picked up on already. This Intergrowth article lines up 27 data points and statistics worth knowing if SEO is part of your grind. As usual, I’ll pick 5, you click the link and read the rest. Deal?

1. "68% of online experiences begin with a search engine."
→ Easy to forget why SEO remains King sh*t. As much as the relationship with our SEs is hot & cold, they still run the game.

2. "63% of all shopping begins online, even if the purchase itself happens in a store."
→ Don’t forget to remind your clients.

3. "The top page listed in a Google search has an average click-through rate of 25.6% (as of March 2023). The second has an estimated 10.25%."
→ Remember this next time some copium addict tries to de-value that sweet, sweet first-page real estate.

4. "Conversion rates are 3x higher for websites that load in 1 second than websites that load in 5 seconds."
→ Patience is a virtue, and virtues are rare.

5. " 79% of consumers trust online reviews as much as they trust personal recommendations."
→ Get on your review game. Now.

→ For a different take on "AI Insight," here’s some "insight" from an AI. That’s right, Greg Jarboe asked ChatGPT for its Top 10 Digital Marketing Trends in 2023. The results? Not bad. The first 5 are:

1. AI and Machine Learning; 2. Voice Search Optimization; 3. Interactive Content; 4. Micro-Moments; 5. Influencer Marketing

TBH, I still need to look deeper into a few of those… #1 seems pretty biased tho, but you’ve gotta appreciate the flex.

→ Meta AI's DINOv2 is a new method for training high-performance computer vision models. DINOv2 uses self-supervision and can learn from any set of images. It has even shown the ability to learn new features like depth estimation. Plus, the model is open-sourced. Pretty cool.

→ Google’s own employees are saying that the rush to keep up with the AI rush led to some serious ethical lapses, and called Bard "worse than useless" and "a pathological liar." Not the only ones saying that about Bard TBH. Low bar for Magi to clear.

→ If you’re wondering what makes ChatBots sound so smart, this is a good article. FWIW: Google Patents, Wikipedia, Scribd are the top 3 contributors to the data set that informs Google's T5 and Facebook's LLaMA.

→ Advertisers, you have been warned: get ready to switch to New Search Ads 360 by April 2024, which is when the version we're using now will be shut down. There are good reasons to make the switch, including better reporting capabilities, enhanced budget planning and better performance, and optimized cross-channel support.

→ If you're considering using the Reader Revenue Manager / Subscribe with Google program- or already do- it's worth knowing that publishers will now receive detailed results via "Subscribed Content" reports.

→ Google seems to be considering replacing "People Also Ask" with either: 1) "More to ask"; 2) "People are also asking"; or 3) "Others want to know."

→ Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Washington, and West Virginia, have become part of a U.S. Department of Justice antitrust lawsuit against Google

→ with an abundance of ads and sponsored posts, is Social Media getting less "social"?; on that note, is it really "doomed to die"?

→ Instagram just dropped some big new changes, including new analytics for Reels like average watch time, a centralized destination to find trending audio and hashtags, easier editing experience re: video, audio, stickers, and text; FWIW, Insta is now also allowing up to 5 links in bio; finally, here’s why it’s worth thinking twice about getting Meta Verified; Meta is also dropping a new series of Webinars on, among other topics, Conversions API (starting April 26, prob worth keeping an eye on)

→ TikTok is getting serious about content moderation, now removing climate change denial videos; meanwhile, Montana is moving to outright ban TikTok in the state;

→ Elon is proud to report that Twitter’s bringing in Keyword Targeting for ads— as Social Media Today points out in this mini history lesson, however, this is a return rather than an innovation, and there were good reasons the platform left targeting behind in the past; the site is also becoming more transparent about what Tweets have been flagged for "restricted reach"; FWIW the app’s ad revenue recovery is still struggling

→ Sounds like Twitter is officially dropped from Microsoft’s advertising platform as of next week— the tech giant’s "Smart Campaigns with Multi-platform" is one among many B2B services passing on Twitter’s $42K API
