What obstacles are facing President Biden's labor secretary nominee?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
The Senate's HELP Committee held a confirmation hearing for Julie Su on Thursday. Currently the acting labor secretary, Su has been nominated to fully replace departing Labor Secretary Marty Walsh. Su previously served as California's commissioner of labor. Su has supported the state's legislative attempts to classify some gig workers as employees, and large labor unions back her confirmation.

Industry groups representing companies that rely on gig labor are strongly pushing against her appointment. Sen. Bill Cassidy, the committee's ranking Republican, said that in California Su enforced 85 laws "that dismantled the gig economy." Cassidy asked her if she would promise to not push California-style regulations if nominated, to which Su agreed.

Su will need at least 50 votes to be confirmed by the entire Senate. Democrats have a thin 51-49 majority, and it is unclear if she has enough support among Democrats. Three senators (two Democrats and one Independent), are hesitant to confirm Su.

Should lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation be banned from K-12 classrooms?

577 votes, 105 comments

Context: Florida extends K-3 classroom restrictions on LGBTQ topics to 12th grade.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I’m a high school English teacher and ordained Baptist minister in a deeply red state. Even if one concedes that these gender identity and sexual orientation issues are blanket immoral [...] there are significant problems with the language of these bans. For example [...] what does and doesn’t constitute “teaching” or “lessons,” the importance of civic discussions and critical thinking on prevalent society discourse, and the difference between actively and intentionally teaching a topic with defined right and wrong answers versus a textual or student-initiated discussion related to a plot point or character development and how it may or may not reflect real-life scenarios.

Unsure - No, it should not be banned from specific reproductive health courses (“sex ed”). And no, it should not be banned from general discussion in older clas...
