Why were classified documents leaked to a Discord group?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Source: BBC via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
On Thursday the FBI arrested Jack Teixeira in connection with the recent leaking of classified defense documents. Texeira, 21, served in the intelligence unit of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. Texeira is believed to be the leader of a private Discord chat room who had the alias "OG." How he acquired the documents is still under investigation.

The Discord community was populated by about 25 young men, some of them teenagers, who bonded over an interest in guns, military gear, video games, and religion. OG appears to have shifted the discussions to his classified knowledge and documents to impress group members.

OG directed group members to not share the files, a request that members honored for months until one teenager shared the documents with a different Discord community in March. Members of OG's community report that he had a disdain for the government and felt he was helping his friends by showing them how it really operates, but that he was not ideologically driven or intent on being a whistleblower.

Should the EPA phase in electric vehicle use via strict auto emissions standards?

408 votes, 78 comments

Context: Biden administration unveils strict auto emissions standards intended to prompt a shift to EVs.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - If emissions are the enemy, this laser focus on vehicles is misplaced. There are over 400 million vehicles in the US. Their emissions are roughly equivalent to power plants. There are a few thousand power plants in the US. Simple problem solving says - focus on the relatively few power plants, clean up their emissions before trying to create a whole new infrastructure that impacts 330 million people directly. The biggest problem is lack of chargers at places where people sleep: homes and apartments. Creating a mini gas station for every single overnight parking spot is not something that will take just 7 years.

Yes - As much as I really don't like big government and them meddling in private industries, setting standards like this really helps ...

Unsure - Meh. I mean I like stricter emissions standards. But I do not like trying to force specific technologies to become adapted. Let ...
