Turning Back from Digital 📫⏰
In this week’s “story that sounds like it could be from The Onion,” AdWeek is reporting that digital clutter has gotten so bad that some brands are turning back to direct mail. Like… Envelope mail. Postage stamps mail. Mail mail.

I looked into it and found some interesting data.
→ “Eight out of 10 marketing managers report better results when adding direct mail to their digital marketing mix”
→ “Online purchases and order size increase 28% when people receive direct mail”
→ “78% of consumers visit the brand’s website or search for info online after receiving direct mail”
→ “44% of online shoppers are 45-64, the demographic most likely to respond to direct mail”
→ “70% of consumers 18-35 — avid online shoppers — have made purchases based on a direct mail piece”

FWIW, because I told you this valuable info on direct mail, this newsletter doesn’t count as “digital clutter.” I don’t make the rules, that’s just facts.
Anyway, might be worth sending out a QR code. Just saying.

AI Insight 🤖‼️
→ In the next few weeks, Microsoft will start passing on Bing’s referrer data and showing clicks and impressions to marketers, which will give us an idea of exactly how much traffic is being driven from the ChatBot. Google Analytics will grant access to this referrer data and so will Bing’s Webmaster Tools.

3 items from SEJ: 1) LaTeX markup is now supported by Bing Chat, which improves the bot's ability to do math; 2) Bing is also listening to users and working to reduce triggers that immediately kill conversations; 3) finally, news grounding has been improved now, which enhances accuracy in current-events-related inquiries.

What’s Good @ Google 📊
→ Speaking of AI, Google is innovating cybersecurity with generative AI with its Cloud Security AI Workbench, which is “fine-tuned for security use cases”
→ 2 weeks after dropping, April’s Reviews Update is still making its presence felt, with growing volatility after relatively humble beginnings. It do be like that sometimes.

→ the official Googlebot documentation has been updated to inform about visits from IPs associated with GoogleUserContent.com— if you’re in SEO, what you need to know is that it's basically filling you in on user-triggered bot visits re: Googlebot - search crawler, special-case crawlers, and user-triggered fetchers (ie. GoogleUserContent).

Looking Past the Person in the Mirror 🪞👉
marketingletter
In marketing, we often forget the purpose behind routines and norms, such as using buyer personas to solve the "person in the mirror" problem. Basically, it’s a common L we take where we often forget that our potential customers have different perspectives and are not as marketing-savvy as us.

TLDR; we need to recognize our own biases and assumptions and separate them from the process whenever we’re building strategies and campaigns.

Social Media Round-up 🤠

Despite the chaos and backlash around Twitter Blue, it's expected that people will come to their senses eventually. Some are even calling the blue check a “badge of dishonor,” but this is strongly disagreed. The situation will hopefully calm down soon.
