Why was Montana's first transgender lawmaker censured?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr was censured by her state's House of Representatives on Wednesday. The censure allows Zephyr to vote on legislation remotely but bars her from accessing the House's chambers. Zephyr is Montana's first transgender state lawmaker.

Last week the House debated SB99, which restricts gender-affirming care for minors. Zephyr spoke against the bill: "The only thing I will say is if you vote yes on this bill [...] I hope the next time there’s an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands." An influential caucus then pushed for her censure, saying her language is "why tragedies such as the Covenant Christian School shooting in Nashville occurred."

Zephyr was then barred from speaking for several days. On Monday hundreds of activists protested her treatment from the House viewing gallery, and Zephyr raised her microphone to them. Some representatives said her conduct broke decorum. Zephyr stands by her actions, saying she has "had friends who have taken their lives because of these bills."

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - As members of the highest court in the country, they should have the strictest ethics rules in the country. Otherwise, how can they be trusted? They should be required to put all assets into blind trusts, and all financial transactions should be reported in actual dollars, not "between XXX and XXX."

Yes - Of course they should, everyone should be able to privately pursue business deals. The context, however, suggests the question should be "Should Supreme Court justices be allowed to privately pursue business deals...

Unsure - It depends on what is meant by "privately". I think all Justices, all Representatives, all Senators...
