👀 E-E-A-T & YMYL: What You Need to Know

Dan Snow joins us this week on the pod

GM nerds,
Welcome back to the newsletter that delivers on Elon’s metric- unregretted user minutes- better than some uncurated social media app ever could ✅

So yeah, here are the un-regrettable things you just need to read up on this week:
→ E-E-A-T and YMYL: What You Need to Know 👀
→ The CEO Spreadsheet 📈
→ Google Giving a Glimpse of "Magi" ✨
→ MMM’s & TikTok 📊
→ + more, obviously 💬

Let’s go 😤
But first…
✍️ Looking To Hire the BEST Writers For A Job?
One of the biggest headaches when I got started was hiring writers. I wish we had found out about our sponsor Workello earlier. Workello can help you identify the best writing candidates for your open positions quickly and easily, saving you time and money.
So why wait? Sign up for Workello today and start taking advantage of the most powerful recruitment platform on the market. Use the coupon code INDEXSY for a special discount.
Ecommerce and media king Dan Snow dropped by the pod this week to talk all things RapTV, but also to talk fundamentals like monetization, sponsorship, leveraging your socials, the process of creating content with a team, and everything else that matters. He drops some takes on what platforms he thinks are best, and explains how he stacks Ws all over the social media landscape with RapTV and other projects. Solid guy, great guest, killer chat. Tune in.
What’s Good @ Google 👀
→ Google I/O is coming up and it looks like Search will be moving away from the standard "ten blue links" in favor of something more "visual, snackable, personal, and human." In its ChatBot era, the goal is also for search to enable something a lot more conversational, and younger audiences are apparently feeling "SERP fatigue." Oh yeah, and I/O will give a closer look at the Magi search engine, which may be rolled out to some crowds by June…

→ Yikes. Here's a good piece on how Google flopped on its promise to develop a better web for media companies and ruined publisher trust in the process.

→ Here's the latest on the unconfirmed Search ranking update from last week. Word on the street? Volatility is for sure happening.

The CEO Spreadsheet 📊
On a recent ep of My First Million, Sam Parr mentioned a "CEO doc." Basically, it’s a spreadsheet tracking the journeys of the most successful CEOs in modern industry from their apprenticeship through their breakthroughs, marking every step along the way by age and length of each stage.

They say not to get too caught up in comparing yourself to others, but here’s the thing: maybe there's nothing wrong with seeing how you stick up to the greats. IMO? Can be helpful. And this doc makes it easy.

I don’t apologize for any dread the comparisons cause you. You’re as young as you’ll ever be. Get your bag!

YMYL & E-E-A-T 🫡
marketingletter
Not the first time this newsletter has dug into a piece on E-E-A-T, obviously, but might be the first time I’ve introduced YMYL— another non-ranking factor that is essential to understand. This Semrush piece on both is a must.

As well as giving really clarifying, thorough explanations of Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, YMYL is unpacked well. ICYMI, YMYL refers to topics that are likely to impact a reader’s health, financial stability, safety, or well-being.

Tips include: creating high-quality content, building authoritative backlinks, being transparent, providing author info, using credible sources, leveraging user-generated content, and cultivating / managing a strong brand reputation.

AI Insight 🤖
→ The Verge is reporting that, as far as Europe goes, OpenAI’s regulatory troubles are just beginning. ChatGPT is no longer banned in Italy, but "ChatGPT’s various issues with misinformation, copyright, and data protection have placed a target on its back."

→ This WaPo piece takes a critical look at how more and more of the internet is being penned by AI.

→ If you’ve been hearing a lot about LLMs, know they’re probably super important for SEO, but still don’t really get what exactly is going on w/ large language models, natural language processing, etc.-- then this is a vital read for getting beyond the hype/fear-mongering and understanding how they actually work as tools, and what they actually are (and aren’t).
Social Media Round-up 🚀
→ Data from TikTok suggest that advancements in the app's data pipeline allow for more effective marketing mix modeling (MMM) than ever, as marketers are achieving +9% ROAS by combining multi-ad formats vs. using one ad format, and more. Oh yeah, and don’t miss this series of workshops offered by TikTok for Small Business Month— starting May 10, the 5 workshops happening over the rest of May.

→ Arguably Twitter’s main competitor from the various new platforms emerging, Bluesky is limiting growth for now, with 60K users in beta and a whopping 1.2M waitlisted.

→ Speaking of Twitter, apparently its bot detection tech is still bad; on the flip side, the "Highlights" feature will let you flex all your most bangin’ bangers on your profile.

→ Meta has vowed to "vigorously fight the FTC" in its proposal to ban the monetization of youth data; Instagram is testing a generative AI sticker creation feature.
