Does Context Matter For Ads? 📊🤔
Research from Integral Ad Science says that almost 2/3 of customers prefer contextually-relevant ads and 3/4 of consumers prefer ads that match the content they’re viewing. Worth following those links for more analysis from MarketingCharts.com.
What’s Good @ Google 📊
→ Looks like Google is back to re-writing titles w/ more frequency, as SEOs around the scene are reporting their titles being changed to shorter and less descriptive alternatives.

→ Google is reducing videos displayed in search results so that thumbnails only appear next to search results when the video is the "main content of a page." This change will impact video-related metrics in Search Console's performance report. With these changes in mind, it might be worth brushing up on Google’s Video SEO Best Practices

→ first-quarter results are in and Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. came back with a strong recovery, doing over $1B better in ad sales than projected— meanwhile, Google’s cloud unit turned a profit for the very first time ($191M). While total 2023 revenue growth shows signs of slowing down, and net earnings actually dipped, the resilience of search was demonstrated by revenue from "Search and Other" rising almost 2% despite the rise in competition from the AI sphere.

→ Even with all these AI options, over 70% of respondents to Greg Sterling’s poll can’t quit Google for Search & Discovery; worth noting that Sterling’s demo is definitely more AI-inclined than your average sample audience, too.

TikTok Shop is launching in Beta and inviting sellers to participate in the first wave. The potential of TikTok's e-commerce is evident, with 92% of users taking action after watching a product in TikTok.

And it’s not just raw potential, either: TikTok Shop is a proven commodity in that it has already caught fire in the app’s second-biggest market, w/  $4.4B of TikTok Shop sales across SE Asia in 2022— it’s been huge in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore.

→ Looks like Twitter is picking up some Ws re: video consumption on the platform— primarily in SE Asia, where 54% of users, and 60% of users aged 18-24, watch videos on Twitter at least once a day; and BTW, check this Twitter cheat sheet by @nevmed:

→ over the next few months, Meta will incentivize Reels creators by offering broader access to monetization via ads; details behind Meta’s Barcelona (aka Instagram for your thoughts) are beginning to emerge: Barcelona will be its own app but you'll use Instagram credentials to sign in and posts will be limited to 500 characters; FWIW, Meta’s Q1 revenue is up 3% YoY to $28.6B, while its net income is down 24% YoY to $5.7B;

→ want to hear the sound of a broken record? Another Twitter alternative has arrived on the scene: T2, whose founders are vets of both Twitter and Google— they’re currently sending out invites to cultivate and slowly grow their small community of testers.

→ Another ChatBot enters the ring: HuggingChat by Hugging Face: “We are not going to stop at replicating ChatGPT. We want to build the assistant of the future, able to not only write email and cover letters, but do meaningful work, use APIs, dynamically research information, and much more, with the ability to be personalized and extended by anyone.”

→ it’s absolutely worth reading the story of How Bing Came To Be for an intimate look at not only Bing’s origins and iterations, but also the Prometheus model behind the tech, and Jordi Ribas’ perspective on the development team’s ‘aha’ moment

→ there’s a Bing-related privacy issue of note, however, as Microsoft Edge seems to be leaking sites users are visiting to Bing… for now, go ahead and disable Edge’s follow creator feature

→ ChatGPT is rolling out some new mods, including the ability to turn off or export chat history, as well as the option to opt out of providing your history as data for training models
