What’s Good @ Google 👀
Lots going on. As expected, Google dropped some bangers and game-changers at I/O. Strap in.

→ No more waitlist for Google Bard, as the service is now available in almost 200 countries in English, Japanese, and Korean (with 40+ more languages coming soon).

Google Lens is also being integrated into Bard, so that images can be uploaded on the user-end, too, rather than just text prompts.

→ Tons of new features, too. Google Search itself released some big new features:

- "Perspectives": which lets users filter to show a range of opinions in video, blog, forum post forms… A major element of this is to optimize Google’s "helpful content" initiative
- "About this image": which shows when the image was first indexed and other info about its history and online presence
- AI-generated labels: a metadata label to be added manually which will tell users if an image is generated by AI

→ There’s a huge emphasis on making Search more visual, rather than exclusively text-based. Search ads are looking different in the new Google Search experience, BTW:

For now, these changes are very experimental, but it’s worth keeping track of how your ads fare re: the changes to Search (even though Google is guaranteeing that there will be efforts to do so on their end, too).

→ More images of generative AI’s integration in Search from @GlennGabe:
→ a dark theme, more exact citation standards, and an "export" button to run code with Replit / Python were also announced at I/O.

→ Worth Watching: the keynote! It covers Bard, Workspace, Search, Cloud, Developers, "Responsible AI," Android intel, and ofc Pixel updates

AI Insight: Meta’s Mind-Bending Model 🌀😵‍💫
→ Meta is trying to not only perfect text, image, and video inputs into AI, but include audio, 3D sensor-detected depth, and thermal elements, too.

The initiative is called "ImageBind" and it promises "holistic AI learning across six modalities."
An Obit to the Metaverse: Justified? 🪦

In late 2022, it’s likely that many would’ve doubted that by May 2023, there’d be non-controversial obituaries to the Metaverse being published. Among the doubters would definitely be Zuck himself. But this wave of AI was an absolute game-changer, and suddenly those legless days of Metaverse hype seem like a lifetime ago.

This piece by certified hater Ed Zitron is probably worth a read, even if you think rumors of the Metaverse’s decline have been greatly exaggerated.

Vimeo vs. YouTube 📽️
I know what you’re thinking: is there still even a case to be made for Vimeo?

This article suggests that choosing YouTube isn’t always as self-evident as it might seem, especially for certain types of projects.

A massive scope of exposure that Vimeo can't even come close to beating + free of charge? Hard to beat. But it's not all Ws for YouTube: competitors bid for ad space on your videos, the copyright rules are intense, and there's little-to-no control over which demos view (and don't view) your video.

Plus, Vimeo's high standards lead to a higher rate of quality video, so there's less chance of your your brand being associated with the dregs of something like YouTube. Plus, Vimeo gives usable music and stock footage, and freedom from worry about the sorts of copyright issues that plague YouTube. Even though Vimeo is more expensive and has a much smaller user base, there are some projects which it might be worth prioritizing.
