Breaking Down the Perfect Newsletter Headline

If you have a newsletter, you know how important your landing page is.

You have less than 5 seconds to convince people to give you their email (and their attention).

And how you convince them is with your headline and subheadline.

No one wants to sign up for “John’s marketing newsletter” (sorry, John).

People want a newsletter that has a clear BENEFIT for them as readers.

Matt McGarry (the newsletter guy on Twitter) gives a very simple framework to write your newsletter headline and subheadline 👇

Simple, but it works.

To prove his point, he shares Justin Welsh’s Saturday Solopreneur page as an example.

In good thief fashion, I went one step further to see what we can steal from that page.

Let’s take a look 👇

The headline’s benefit is pretty clear: Launch, grow, and monetize.

I also like how he subtly hints at different types of audiences (launch, grow or monetize) so he can capture more people.

This headline (following Matt's framework) explains the benefit.

Then, the subheadline does the rest with:

• Social proof (100k subs)
• Setting expectations (every Saturday).
• Clarity on HOW Justin delivers the benefit (one actionable tip, less than 4 minutes)

The Saturday Solopreneur has over 100k subscribers, and this headline and subheadline are a good reason why.

Building a paid community/membership: High Ticket or Low Ticket?

One of my biggest doubts as I explore how to build The Steal Club membership is whether it should be a "high ticket" ($$$$ offer) or a "low ticket" (more affordable).

Conventional wisdom says charge a lot and serve less people.

It's less work, on paper.

But I came across Daniel's tweet with the total opposite perspective 👇

He makes $440,000/year with his membership (yes, you read that right), so his argument is worth paying attention to.

Paid lead magnets. Do they really lead to more sales?

My friend Dylan (hire him if you need email marketing help) did a pretty cool test with his lead magnets.

The thesis:

A $1 lead magnet would attract a higher quality audience (that buys more products) than the free ones.

The experiment:

He put 3 lead magnet out there:

• A free swipe file
• A free case study
• A $1 course

Then he let people come in into his funnel for a while.

The result:

After a while, he launched his $99 email challenge to his email list.

He converted 2,1% of his list, but the spread of buyers is where it gets interesting:

Logic would tell you that people who are willing to spend anything (even $1) would BUY MORE.

But in Dylan's case, it wasn't like that.

I think the case study lead magnet worked because, among all products, this generated the most TRUST in his audience.

It probably went deeper than the other two products on Dylan's expertise, earning the buyer's trust to teach them more.
