GM nerds,
Welcome back to the newsletter brave enough to admit that, personally…

AI Insight 🤖
→ Massive news out of Japan as they go "all in" on AI and decide that copyright simply doesn’t apply to AI Training.

→ Sam Altman from ChatGPT / OpenAI sat down with the very smart people at Station F in Paris, France and had a deep conversation about the future of AI and everything that’s happened so far. Here’s a transcript.

→ In a move earning a lot of praise, Bing is finally improving answers with anchor link hypertext.

→ The Google Search Experience AI UX? At the moment, definitely bumpy. Asked for instructions to boil an egg, the result is an hour-long process that includes 5 separate steps of cooking and boiling alone:
→ But seriously, here’s a good look at how the GSE compares to its competitors that comes to the conclusion that it’s "promising" and very accurate more often than not (at least regarding queries it feels comfortable engaging).

→ And here are the reflections on GSE & SEO shared by Certified Real One Gael Breton from Authority Hacker.

Web3 & SEO 🕸️
With all the buzz around AI in 2023, it seems like forever ago that we were all obsessed with Web3’s impact on the industry. Well, Matt Southern at SEJ just reminded us that Web3 isn’t a thing of the past, and the world of digital marketing must adapt.

The article unpacks a recent ep of Search Off the Record, Google’s BTS podcast, as they talk shop on Decentralized Apps, Blockchain-Based Domains, Digital Identity & Privacy, and more. The major impact of Web3 on SEO is rooted in its unconventional domains and limited crawlability, which the same old SEO methods may not interact with optimally.

What’s Good @ Google 📊
→ Nathan Gotch’s series on E-E-A-T is maybe more informative than any I’ve seen so far.
  • For Experience, he explains all 3 different meanings of the term, provides examples of perfect optimization, describes the best way to demonstrate it in a Google-friendly manner, and even shares an "evil" way to do so using AI. More importantly, he tells you what to avoid at all costs.
  • For Expertise, he explains how to build authority and become a "perfect expert," despite difficulties in defining WTF exactly Google thinks "experience" is.
  • He breaks Authoritativeness into Brand Authority (Audience Engagement, Reputation, etc.), Backlink Authority, Topic Authority (Page and Domain -level), and Author Authority, then offers 10 practical ways to build up this search factor.
  • Finally, Gotch's breakdown of Trustworthiness offers 7 ways to make your brand more trustworthy— including, crucially, on YMYL matters.
I know you might be sick of reading E-E-A-T content, but this breakdown clarifies key concepts in about as thorough of terms as you could ask for

Google Search Console has added insights like a "Your growing content" report. This adaptation allows the GSI to tell you more about your content's performance, including what's most popular, what's trending on Search, and more. Helpful stuff.

Social Media Round-up 📲
→ This study shows that TikTok is still winning the user engagement wars vs. Insta Reels & YouTube Shorts, registering twice the comments than Reels and Shorts. But, TBH, not as cut and dry as you might think. Reels is winning in total watch time, which is surprising considering TikTok has brands posting double as much as they do on the other two platforms.

→ Looks like Reddit might be charging Apollo, a popular Reddit-based iOS app, something around $20M per year for the use of its API. Reddit’s plan is to charge roughly $12,000 per 50 million requests. If you’re crunching those numbers, here’s the crux of it: Apollo made 7 billion API requests last month.

→ Check this "ultimate guide" to Meta’s new ad formats.

→ Elon might be flying a little close to the sun here. If there’s one type of business you may want to square up on your debt to, it might just be a PR management firm. Especially when the app you just bought has fallen to a value of only ⅓ of purchase price. Oof.

Angie Gensler dropped 24 hot tips on social media marketing. Here’s the Top 10:

→ Finally, take it for what it’s worth (this one always seems to shift), but Giraffe Social Media says these are the best times for posting:
