How has poor air quality affected parts of the US this week?

  1. Summary
Tens of millions of Americans in 17 states, primarily in the Northeast, are under air quality alerts due to smoke drifting in from wildfires in Canada. Canadian officials say they are seeing one of the worst wildfire seasons on record. The country is receiving wildfire assistance from the US.

Late Tuesday, New York City was rated as having the worst air quality of any major city in the world, reaching 400 on the Air Quality Index (50 is considered good, 300 is considered hazardous). The city closed beaches and sporting events were cancelled. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said 1 million N95 masks would be available throughout the state. Flights to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington DC were paused or delayed.

Human-caused climate change is increasing the conditions that make large wildfires more likely. But University of Toronto physicist Kent Moore told Yahoo! News that while climate change plays a role in this case, the more proximate cause is the unusual spring seen in Canada. "There’s just natural variability,” he said. “Some springs are dry and some springs are wet."

Should taxpayer-funded religious charter schools be allowed?

535 votes, 80 comments

Context: Oklahoma approves nation's first religious charter school funded by state.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - My five children went to private religious schools as do many of my grandchildren. Unlike the rights of every American to receive a fully supported education, private schools are a choice and not a right. Using taxpayer funding will damage already struggling public schools by limiting available funds and risk damaging the religious schools by asserting the rules and regulations of public funding.

Yes - As the Supreme Court has reiterated in its First Amendment jurisprudence, the government must be indifferent as to religion, neither endorsing nor discriminating against religion. That is, to prohibit st...
