Why did a court award a former Starbucks regional manager $25.6 million?

Source: Los Angeles Times via Yahoo! News

  1. Summary
Shannon Phillips, a former regional manager for nearly 100 Starbucks locations, was awarded $25.6 million after a jury agreed with her claim that she was fired because she is white. The case stems from a 2018 incident in which a Philadelphia store called the police on two black men who spent time in the store without buying anything.

The men were not charged, but a viral video of their arrest resulted in protests and led Starbucks to close all of its locations to hold bias trainings. Phillips said she was later ordered to suspend a white manager who had been accused of misconduct and oversaw some Philadelphia stores, but not the Rittenhouse Square location involved in the incident.

Starbucks sought the manager's termination because it promised to take further action in a settlement with the two men. Phillips fought the allegations against the manager and was later suspended. Her complaint notes no action was taken against the manager of the Rittenhouse location, who is black and made the 911 call that resulted in the arrests.

No - I find the Biden administration and the media including food and energy in the stat when it’s convenient to do so and removing it when it’s not. We’ve lapped the worst year and so the YoY rate will look better, however, over the 2-year period it’s still at its worst since the 80s.
