How severe is a recent ransomware campaign that hit federal agencies?

Source: Government Accountability Office

  1. Summary
US officials confirmed last week that the Russian ransomware gang Clop gained access to data from several federal agencies, including the Department of Energy. The breach was part of a larger operation conducted by Clop that also targeted state governments, universities, and companies.

Clop exploited a flaw in the software MOVEIt, which has been purchased by a number of federal agencies, including NASA, the Treasury Department, and parts of the Defense Department. It is unclear how many agencies currently use it. The director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said the beach was not as damaging as other high-profile cyberattacks, like the 2020 SolarWinds incident.

An anonymous CISA official said the agency does not have evidence to suggest Clop coordinated with the Russian government. Russian ransomware attacks have historically appeared financially motivated, but in recent months seem to have taken on a more political bent, primarily targeting countries supporting Ukraine.

If dockworkers on the West Coast strike, should President Biden block it?

Context: Biden administration helps negotiate tentative deal between dockworkers and ports.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Although I support the union's right to collective bargaining, a lockout on the ports would immediately impact the flow of goods onto the market creating shortages and putting extra pressure on inflation. The need to keep any manufactured inflationary factors under control is paramount at this point.

No - Although it is clear this power has been given "in the case of a national emergency" and I agree that in a national emergency it should be an option, the fact that you don't like the impact ...
