What is known about Hunter Biden's plea deal with federal prosecutors?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
As part of a deal with federal prosecutors, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax evasion charges and participate in a pretrial program for a gun-related offense. The Justice Department will reportedly recommend probation for the tax charges, which include intentional failure to pay about $100,000 in income tax twice.

The firearm offense concerns Hunter's brief 2018 possession of a handgun, which was unlawful due to his drug addiction. The pretrial program could lead to the gun charge being dismissed. GOP Rep. James Comer described the plea deal as a "slap on the wrist" because the Oversight Committee, which he leads, is finding growing evidence of Biden family corruption. Comer said the deal would not stop the committee's investigation.

Former US attorney for Utah Brett Tolman said the plea deal is lenient by Justice Department standards and that "Thousands have been sent to prison [...] for the same charges." But former federal prosecutor Shan Wu argued in the Daily Beast that Hunter faces unusually harsh charges.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - We focus so much on gun deaths and ignore gun injuries that result from these mass shootings. Over 200 people per day are injured. The toll this puts on our hospitals and law enforcement is staggering. The long-term effects and permanent disability are costly. We have got to get a grasp on this.

No - The term "mass shooting" has traditionally described incidents where the victims are all innocent, and engaging in normal activities such as work, shopping, movies...
