How has Justice Samuel Alito responded to a report that alleges misconduct on his part?

  1. Summary
ProPublica on Tuesday reported that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito took a luxury fishing vacation in 2008 with Paul Singer, a hedge fund billionaire and GOP megadonor who later had 10 cases before the Supreme Court. Singer paid for Alito's private jet flight. Experts told ProPublica that they could not identify another instance of a justice ruling on a case after receiving a large gift from one of the parties.

Justice Alito pre-emptively responded in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, saying he was unaware of Singer's connection to the entities that brought the later Supreme Court cases, but that even if he was, he would not have been required to recuse himself. Alito also said he was not close with Singer. Experts say private jet flights count as gifts that must be disclosed under ethics rules, but Alito said the justices do not share that interpretation.

Singer's spokesperson said at the time of the trip, he did not have pending cases before the court, "nor could [Singer] have anticipated in 2008 that a subsequent matter would arise that would merit Supreme Court review."

Is the cost of living the primary cause of homelessness in the US?

445 votes, 54 comments

Context: Survey of California's homeless finds half lost home after age of 50.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I do not think there is a writ large primary cause of homelessness. As a Californian who earns a good salary and still finds it impossible to get ahead in this state, I will not negate the cost of living as a substantial factor in being homeless. However, all the other causes of homelessness (i.e. prior incarceration, substance abuse, mental illness, etc.) result in financial instability, which results in not being able to keep up with the absurdly high cost of living in California.
