Why did the House of Representatives censure Rep. Adam Schiff?

Source: House of Representatives

  1. Summary
The House of Representatives has voted along party lines to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) for "misleading the American public." Schiff, who used to chair the Intelligence Committee, was censured for comments he made about investigations into former President Trump's alleged ties to Russia and Russia's foreign election interference.

Republicans say Schiff's statements led to the FBI filing an error-ridden application to surveil a former Trump aid, and that Schiff went too far in alleging Trump colluded with Russia. Democrats asked why the GOP has not moved to censure Republican Rep. George Santos. Earlier in the day, Republican House leaders averted a push by conservative Rep. Lauren Boebert to impeach President Biden over his border policy.

The censure is symbolic: it serves as a public condemnation, but does not expel the member or deny them any privileges. Only two other representatives (one Democrat and one Republican) have been censured in the 21st century, both under a Democratic-controlled House.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Of course I do and everyone should. The question is not simply whether Sam Alito was influenced in this or that case. I bet he wasn't. But it looks awful. Judges at all levels ought to be completely above reproach. No significant gifts. No luxury trips. No schmoozing with billionaires. Pay them good salaries and let them spend within a budget the way the rest of us do. These revelations about Thomas and now Alito are a stain on the court and I fear the justices don't realize just how badly their image has suffered.
