Ahrefs’ Digest #144: Avoiding bad links, tactics to improve SEO, and more

How did we even do it?

Moving on to this week’s newsletter:

🔝 SEO

Tactics to improve SEO: Including FAQ sections, filling content gaps, and optimizing for featured snippets—these 15 tactics can help to improve your rankings (without having to create new content).

Bad links to avoid: Bad links typically have no positive impact on rankings or traffic. They can even trigger a Google penalty. You’ll want to avoid these eight types, e.g., PBNs, link exchanges, and more.

Subdomains vs. subdirectories: Adam Gent analyzed many public SEO studies and found that when companies move blog or service pages from a subdomain to a subdirectory, they see a positive improvement in SEO performance.

How I took my e-commerce brand to >£10K/month from SEO: Freddie Chatt’s SEO strategy isn’t unique. It’s really just about executing SEO fundamentals. And it works!

Writing great SEO tickets: If you want dev teams to prioritize your SEO requests, you need to write great SEO tickets. Gus Pelogia shares his tips, from adding sufficient context (devs may not know SEO) to telling them the expected impact.

Google Search Console’s message about INP: Many people received emails from Google Search Console warning the INP on their sites could be improved. Don’t panic: It’s likely not a new issue, but simply GSC making you aware of an existing issue where the user experience on your site could be improved.

💻 Digital marketing

KUBA framework: The biggest mistake leadership teams make is not sharing the context behind strategy changes. Use this framework to communicate well with your teams.

Lessons learnt at HubSpot from $0 to $20 billion: Brian Halligan is the co-founder at HubSpot and its previous CEO. These are the 20 CEO lessons he learned. I like his sentiment that company culture is your second product and that you’re selling it not to customers but to your employees.

Treating your team like children is holding them back: Most people say they aren’t treating their team members like children. Yet they routinely withhold information, block progress, hoard decision-making, and formulate rigid policies. You want to reverse all of the above and treat your team members as adults: defaulting to truth and honesty, minimizing policies, removing their blockers, and delegating decision-making.

Till next time ;)
Cheers,
