How are Texas and New York City responding to migration?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
Two migrants have died near Texas' barrier of floating buoys in the Rio Grande river, one of whom is a child. Mexico's president blamed the deaths on Texas' "inhumane" border tactics. Sharp metal between the buoys can cut those who try to pass through it. Texas has also erected razor wire by the banks of the riverbed. Critics say the fortifications increase the risk of drownings, and Mexico views the floating barrier as a treaty violation.

Texas officials claim that neither death occurred because of the river barrier, and say the child's death seems to have occurred miles upstream. While the other body was found caught in the barrier, state officials say preliminary information indicates the man died before he got stuck to the buoys. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's spokesman noted four migrants drowned in the river in early July alone, before the barrier was established.

Meanwhile, images of migrants sleeping on the street in New York City are going viral. 93,000 migrants have entered the city since last spring, half of whom remain. Mayor Eric Adams says the city's shelters are at capacity.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I agree that LEDs last longer and use less electricity than incandescents, and converted to LEDs a few years ago. I would support a government campaign to communicate LEDs' advantages, but an outright ban on a product that presents no immediate public health or national security danger oversteps the government's proper role.
