Why will Space Command be headquartered in Colorado?

Source: Space Command

  1. Summary
This week President Biden reversed former President Trump's decision to move the US Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama. Space Command oversees US military operations in space; the Space Force supplies troops and training to Space Command. Politicians in Colorado and Alabama have been fighting to host the official headquarters for years.

The decision comes as Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a Republican, has delayed hundreds of routine military promotions in protest of the Pentagon's policy of paying for service members' out-of-state abortion travel. Tuberville on Monday said the decision "looks like blatant patronage politics."

The White House said that the decision is unrelated to Tuberville's protest or Alabama's abortion ban. Space Command Gen. James Dickinson said relocating the headquarters "would jeopardize military readiness." Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall previously described the relocation decision as up to him, but the decision was reportedly made by Biden himself: experts told Military.com that the seemingly unilateral move is unusual.

Should the US reduce regulations for nuclear power plants?

340 votes, 36 comments

Context: United States' first new nuclear reactor in seven years begins operation.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The push to do so is centered around relaxing risk assessment. What motivates those making that push? Greed. Who wants a nuclear power plant nearby that is constructed without having identified the risks, their likelihood of occurrence, the magnitude of their impact and developed response plans should any such risks manifest. Nuclear energy is a key part of our energy future, but it must be developed in a responsible, cost effective and safe manner; or, the opportunity may be lost for a century or more. Get it right, then move forward.

Yes - Relative to cleanliness, safety, land use, environment and amount of energy produced, there is literally nothing that comes close to nuclear power. At least until fusion is viable. While ...

Unsure - It probably depends on the specific regulation we're talking about. I've heard that nuclear power was relatively cheap ...
