Why is a century-old trucking company shutting down?

  1. Summary
The Yellow Trucking Corp. shuttered operations on Sunday, according to the Teamsters union, which represents 22,000 of the company's workers. The move will likely mean the loss of 30,000 jobs. Yellow is the nation's third-largest less-than-truckload carrier (LTL carriers move pallet-sized shipments, smaller than a container but larger than a parcel). One expert told NPR the shutdown will not cause a supply-chain crisis.

A strike at the company was averted days ago, when a pension fund agreed to extend health benefits for workers affected by the company's failure to contribute to the benefits payment fund. Analysts told NPR that fears of a strike caused Yellow's clients to flee to its competitors, as did Yellow's assertions during union negotiations that it was running out of cash.

Earlier this year Yellow blamed the Teamsters for blocking a debt refinancing operation that it said was "essential to the company's survival." The Teamsters countered that Yellow has been poorly managed for decades and wasted a $700 million federal bailout loan.

Context: Arkansas legislation would remove immunity librarians receive under state obscenity law.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Hey parents, go to the library with your child. Take an interest in what they check out and read. You can say no to your child. Adults should have the right to make their own choices. By the way, for all of you who want to be judge and jury on these materials, when do the rest of us get to be judge and jury on the materials you propose? I would prefer children aren't taught fictional history made up by people with an agenda.

Yes - This does not ban any books (despite the suggestion of context), the argument doesn't seem to be that people who give or sell obscene materials to minors shouldn't be charged, but that specific people (librarians) are ...
