I love learning; so much, that I was enrolled in seven different subjects throughout my time in university. I always had a main gig (what I got my degrees in), plus fun academic side-quests like that class I took on 1960s performance art.

Curiosity drives me, which is great! It also has its drawbacks.

This week I realized that, yes, you can overdo learning.

Too much learning is a thing, especially when it gets in the way of doing.

One of my hardest lessons in business so far has been to cultivate a bias for action.

Sure, you need to generally know what you’re doing.

Once you’ve covered the basics, however, real progress and insights come from taking action, not buying another book, reading another blog post, and listening to yet another podcast.

Learning can be a form of procrastination.

This week, I prioritized taking action in a massive way. It felt unnerving and satisfying at the same time. It was more pleasant than sitting around, reading another blog post about how to do the thing I want to do, instead of actually doing it.

That’s how I’ve realized that I was using learning as a form of procrastination. Some learning is good, too much learning is a waste of your time, if you want to achieve something specific like growing your business.

Questions I’m asking myself to find the sweet spot between learning and doing

I’m still learning (see what I did there? 😅) how to move out of over-learning and under-doing. Asking these questions can help with that:

Learning is a really great. It’s one of the best parts in life. I SO cherish curiosity. At the same time, there is a place and time for chilling on hitting the books. That’s what all this is about. It’s not an excuse to never touch a book again ;)
