How are workers being impacted by the cooling labor market?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
The latest Department of Labor jobs report, covering July, was published last week. The report found employers added 187,000 jobs, a solid increase but marked slowdown from last year's average monthly growth of 400,000 jobs. The unemployment rate remains near a half-century low of 3.5%.

The data indicates that the labor market, as well as the larger economy, are cooling in line with the Federal Reserve's goal of a "soft landing" -- in which higher interest rates curb inflation without causing a recession or deep job losses. The report builds on figures from June, which showed workers were quitting at a slower rate while job openings decreased, an indication that workers are less confident in their ability to find new positions.

The tight pandemic labor market was accompanied by historically high pay increases, as workers had more bargaining power. Economists told CNBC that while conditions have "normalized substantially," workers in certain industries still retain leverage. Arts and entertainment jobs, for example, are still seeing high quit rates and low layoffs.

Are Texas' Rio Grande border fortifications unethical?

460 votes, 64 comments

Context: Texas places floating barrier in Rio Grande, razor wire on river banks; critics say it increases drowning risk.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - What makes them unethical? Walls, fences, barbed or razor wire, watch towers with armed guards and many more items are used to deter people from entering or leaving somewhere they shouldn't be. Borders, prisons, capitals, Area 51, military bases, private property and businesses all around the world utilize all these methods to change people's behavior and deter them from breaking laws and rules. It's a shame when people choose to break those laws and rules and have immediate consequences, but that doesn't make it unethical.
