Why did a judge give former officer Tou Thao a longer-than-expected prison sentence?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Tou Thao, the former Minneapolis police officer who held off bystanders while fellow officer Derek Chauvin pinned George Floyd to the ground in 2020, was sentenced to nearly five years in state prison on Monday. Thao was the last of four officers to have his case decided. The state prison sentence will run concurrently with his ongoing federal sentence, meaning he will get credit for nearly a year of time already served.

At the sentencing, Thao read Bible passages for 23 minutes. "Obviously, on that day, we didn’t intend on – I didn’t intend on doing any malice or anything like that, or try to hurt anyone. [...] Obviously the outcome didn’t come out the way I wanted it, so I’ll leave it at that," he also said.

Thao did not apologize for his actions at the hearing, leading Judge Peter Cahill to issue a higher sentence. "After three years [of] reflection, I was hoping for a little more [remorse]," Cahill said. "Suffice it to say that I think your culpability is less than Mr. Chauvin, but well above Mr. [J. Alexander] Kueng and Mr. [Thomas] Lane as an experienced officer."

Has the tight labor market been a good thing?

233 votes, 26 comments

Context: Latest data shows slower increase in new jobs, reduction in quit rate.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - From the standpoint of labor, it's great. There will be increased pressure for across the board wage increases that will help reverse the decline in real incomes over the last 50 years. To paraphrase that line from Field of Dreams, "if you pay them, they will come." To the extent there is a genuine labor shortage after wages are back to historical "normal" it will force us to develop a logical approach to immigration policy. This is also going to be necessary because after Covid, the retiring of the "baby boomers", and the fact that our current birth rate is below replacement level, we just won't have enough people here to support the current economy.

No - While I'd normally say yes, the tight labor market hasn't done enough to improve wages and working conditions. The middle class is getting slaugh...

Unsure - I think it depends on where you look at it from. Considering the spiking wages have added to the already increased costs of things would be a ...
