What new information has emerged about Maui's wildfires?

  1. Summary
93 people are confirmed to have died in Maui's wildfires as of Sunday, making the incident the deadliest US wildfire in a century. About 2,200 structures are destroyed, and 1,000 people remain missing. The head of the Hawaii Firefighters Association said Maui did not have enough firefighters.

Hawaii has been praised for having one of the world's largest outdoor all-hazard public safety warning systems, but there is no record of the system being triggered at the start of last week's fires. Alerts were instead sent out via cellphones, radio, and TV stations, but power and cellular outages may have limited their reach. The University of Hawaii's Karl Kim said wildfires are the most difficult natural disaster to predict.

The fires will likely have an economic impact, as 51% of Maui County's jobs are in the tourism sector and the mostly-destroyed town of Lahaina was a major attraction. Tourism researcher Rich Harrill wrote in The Conversation that New Orleans saw a tourism recovery within a decade after Hurricane Katrina, as did the Hawaiian island of Kauai after a 1992 hurricane.

Should self-driving taxi services be allowed to expand in more cities?

Context: California regulators allow self-driving taxi services to expand operations in San Francisco.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Self-driving vehicles, if they are not already, will be significantly safer than human operators. Regardless of the anecdotal stories we have regarding Tesla accidents and the like, the statistics and predictive math support this claim. I believe that in the near future most vehicles on the road will be self-driving. However, driverless cars need more road time and miles driven to improve their performance and safety, and the only thing that will prevent that from happening is the public's fear.
