What made wildfires in Hawaii so damaging?

  1. Summary
A series of wildfires in Hawaii have injured dozens and displaced hundreds. While three fires were burning on the state's Big Island, the heaviest damage occurred in Maui, where at least six people died. Power outages and downed cellular networks have slowed rescue efforts.

Maui's historic Lahaina Town sustained heavy damage: while the number of buildings lost is unclear, its downtown appears destroyed. Lahaina Town is a popular tourist destination with a town center that dates to the 1700s. The fire has destroyed historic temples, buildings, and cemeteries there, and forced a dozen people to jump into the water to escape.

Winds from the passing Hurricane Dora fueled the rapid expansion of the fires. Acting Hawaii Gov. Sylvia Luke said the state had been preparing for rain and floods, and did not expect the fires. Wildfires were historically rare for Hawaii, but have become more likely amid a drying and warming climate. Invasive grasses, which were introduced to Hawaii a century ago and now cover a quarter of its land, also enable fire to spread more quickly.

YESTERDAY'S POLL

Should a simple majority of voters be able to amend a state's constitution?

410 votes, 55 comments

Context: Ohio voters reject Issue 1, which raises the bar for approval of a state constitutional amendment.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Constitutional changes should require supermajority votes, unlike legislative changes which require a mere simple majority. Constitutions are not supposed to be shifting sands subject to whimsical policy changes. Constitutions are supposed to the firm bedrock upon which governments are built around. Legislation, which the constitution vests the legislative branch the power to make and the executive the power to veto, is the proper forum for simple majority votes on policy.

Unsure - I'm not a fan of a simple majority being able to change the constitution. I think it should be more like 55-60%. However, that was only half the ba...
