Why is the United Auto Workers' leader criticizing Biden's climate law?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers, criticized aspects of President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act this week. The IRA grants billions to incentivize automakers to produce electric vehicles, but does not have accompanying measures requiring strong wages or working conditions. "Money can’t go to companies with no strings attached. Labor needs a seat at the table. [...] This is the future of the car industry at stake," Fain said.

The White House maintains that the incentives will produce good-paying union jobs. But unions worry that auto employment will decrease, as electric vehicles require fewer parts to manufacture. Critics also note that new EV plants are being built in states with weaker labor laws. The UAW has so far withheld its endorsement for Biden's 2024 campaign.

Fain's remarks come as the UAW negotiates its next contract with Detroit's big automakers (Ford, General Motors, and Dodge owner Stellantis). The union is seeking a 40% pay increase and a variety of other benefits for 146,000 workers. Some worry a potential strike would raise car prices.

Has former President Trump received too many indictments?

Context: Fourth Trump indictment arrives.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - While he may spout that the investigations are a “politically motivated witch hunt," indictments come from a grand jury. A grand jury is comprised of ordinary citizens - from both political sides. Upon reviewing evidence, they decide whether or not to pursue an indictment. If there is enough evidence to support indictments - then there cannot be too many.
