Why was a Trump White House advisor convicted of contempt of Congress?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Peter Navarro, trade advisor for the Trump White House, was found guilty of contempt of Congress on Thursday. Navarro was subpoenaed by the House Jan. 6 Committee. The two misdemeanor counts are each punishable by a maximum of a year in prison.

Prosecutors argued Navarro willfully failed to comply with the subpoena, refusing to testify or produce documents. Navarro sought to argue that he could not cooperate with the committee because Trump had invoked executive privilege. Judge Amit Mehta ruled Navarro could not make the argument because he did not have enough evidence to show Trump invoked executive privilege, leading Navarro to say the "die was cast."

Navarro's attorney claimed the government failed to prove that Navarro's failure to comply "was not the result of accident, mistake or inadvertence." Jurors took about four hours to deliberate. Navarro has vowed to appeal the verdict. Navarro is the second Trump aide to be convicted of contempt of Congress, after Steve Bannon, who is free while his appeal pends.

Do you support federal restrictions on oil drilling in the Arctic?

Context: Biden admin seeks ban on drilling in part of national reserve in Alaska, cancels leases.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - In addition to there not being any shortage of oil, there is also no shortage of oil leases in other parts of the country that are owned by companies that are not drilling them. This tells me there is no reason to be drilling in one of the most environmentally sensitive areas of the country. This is some of the last wilderness we have. I simply don't understand why we need to be giving the oil companies more when they are not even using what they already have. Even if they drilled and pumped more, that won't have any effect on the price here, which is the argument usually made in favor of doing it. That is all a global market now.

No - The national and economic security of the US depends on development of all sources of energy. Substantial oil reserves can be developed responsibly ...
