The Ohio State University researchers conducted multiple experiments to reveal how users react to ads which they know have used behavioral targeting.
Those participants
+ who were told
+ the ad was targeted to them
+ based on their browsing history
... ended up evaluating themselves as
+ more sophisticated
+ after seeing the targeted ad,
- compared to those who didn’t think the ad was targeted.
Surprise:
The ads used in the study were not actually based on participant’s behavior — the participants were only made to think that they were.
Related study by Adlicent found that:
Consumers are almost 2x as likely to click on an ad for an unknown product if it's personalized.
