This week’s newsletter is presented by Refind. Join 100+ newsletters that are growing faster with Refind’s Conversion Ads.
Last month, on a call with a client, I suggested an idea for an A/B test they could run to convert more readers to paying subscribers. This month, we got together to review the results.

The test didn’t work — it didn’t drive significant conversions for them.

But I was still delighted about the test. Why?

They hadn’t done any sort of A/B testing before on their conversion messaging. And even though this test didn’t work, they immediately saw the potential value in testing. They’ve already pitched the next test they want to run.

Every test won’t lead to positive results. But I’d bet that in the long run, if this org keeps testing, they’ll figure out a few things that work — and it’ll have a real impact on their bottom line.

Three Questions Everyone Should Ask in a Survey

Not every newsletter grows or monetizes in the same way. But every smart newsletter operator I talk to makes surveys a key part of their strategy.

So I’ve taken everything I know about running a survey and put it into a single guide. Inside, you’ll learn:
  • The three questions you should ask in every survey.
  • What to ask to create genius marketing copy for your newsletter.
  • How to use surveys to improve your ad strategy.
  • What tools to use to run a survey.
  • How orgs like The Atlantic and Financial Times turn survey results into action items.
Here’s what you need to know to run a survey that takes your newsletter to the next level in 2024.

In case you missed it...

You don’t need a massive email list to monetize. Case in point: Jen A. Miller, sold $9,500 of ebooks even though she had just 894 email subscribers.

When should you put content behind a paywall to convert readers to subscribers? Virginia Sole-Smith, author of Burnt Toast, explained her strategy, which has turned her newsletter into a product that brings in six figures annually.

Now’s a great time to think about running a campaign to win back inactive readers. These are the six emails to send as part of a great reactivation campaign.
One final thank you: All of the stories we publish this fall are presented thanks to Who Sponsors Stuff, which gives you and your team the tools to quickly find and reach out to relevant sponsors for your newsletter.
