Responsive - instead of having to create an entirely separate site, you can simply create one version that is responsive to different screen sizes.
Adaptive - the server identifies the device type that the visitor is using and then loads the correct version of the site.
CatchPoint ran an interesting research study on this.
They created 2 versions (Responsive and Adaptive) of the same page with the same content, same visuals, same everything.
Results:
Every test showed that the Adaptive version is at least 2 times faster than the Responsive one.
Just a recap on how important speed is: "1 second delay decreases Amazon's revenue by $1.6 billion annually."
