Why did you begin your company? We are in the midst of a global transformation, and our future is ours to define. While we grapple with critical questions about the future of humanity and our planet, and people seek out alternative, generative ways of being, building, and relating, I felt that this was the perfect time to amplify the wealth of wisdom that exists in Africa and our diaspora. For too long, we've been alienated from the powerful perspectives of cultures and communities beyond the West that have the potential to help us find ways forward. Ijeruka attempts to change that. As an employer, how do you embed “impact” in the hiring process? At Ijeruka, inclusion and accessibility are at the core of our work. We welcome applicants from all walks of life. Given the nature of our courses, our audience, and our mission, we encourage applications from those who grew up in the Global South (or Majority World). We especially encourage applications from people of African descent, in all our beauty and diversity. We have tried to make this recruitment process as accessible as possible but know that there might be more that we can do, especially as an early-stage company. The application questions and activities are also designed to be holistic, giving you an opportunity to really show us who you are. We ask about how you show compassion to teammates, what thinkers inspire you, how you educate people about the issues you care about, and what you've been working on for yourself lately. Tell us about Ijeruka: what would love for job seekers to know before they apply? Any tips? Ijeruka is only a year old (crazy!) so new team members will play a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the company and their specific roles. This means that you’ll have space to be creative and work closely with me to deliver meaningful impact! However, it also means you'll need to be dependable, adaptable, and very proactive. As a small, agile, and collaborative startup, these are expansive roles, so we are looking for someone who can roll up their sleeves and dive straight in. Let’s say you receive thousands of high-quality candidates for your job openings: what stands out to you in reading applications? Before starting Ijeruka, I was always driven to work in spaces that aligned with my personal values and sense of purpose. I would love to see that reflected in the applications we receive. This is a deeply mission-driven company. As a first-time founder, I strongly believe you can learn any technical skill - I've had to - so while skill and experience are important, demonstrated passion, genuine interest, and values/mission-alignment is what really counts. Standout candidates will have taken the time to respond thoughtfully to the prompts, which are really designed to assess that.

🎤Deconstructing the True Impact of Corporate Social Change, by Athena Garcia: I am a full-time student at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I am currently pursuing a degree in Public Policy. Alongside my academic journey, I am engaged in a part-time internship with a startup called Buddi. This company is focused on advocating for mental health on college campuses, aligning with my passion for making a positive impact in the field of mental health awareness and support. My unofficial role centers around my position as the podcast host of "Deconstructing the True Impact of Corporate Social Change." I delve into the multifaceted aspects of corporate social change, exploring its true impact and implications. Looking ahead, my aspirations involve expanding my involvement in the field of corporate social impact, with a keen interest in contributing to and shaping the evolving landscape of responsible business practices. You can support my work by listening to my podcast, connecting with me on LinkedIn – building a circle of strong, intelligent, kind, and level-headed friends is a priority for me 💜
